Information about the Bicycle and Pedestrian Amenities section of the Engineering Division.

Albuquerque is constantly improving and expanding upon its existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities for the enjoyment, safety, health and convenience of its citizens. Efforts for improving the overall system have been recently focused on grade separations with multi-use trails and major arterials, filling in the gaps within the bikeways system to create connectivity, and adding additional bicycle and multi-use trail routes. The goal is to provide the citizens of Albuquerque options when it comes to biking or walking for daily exercise and commuting.

Active Transportation Committee

The City has an advisory committee that advises City departments on the needs of people who walk and bike, which is called the Greater Albuquerque Active Transportation Committee (GAATC).

Bikeway and Trail Facilities Plan Update

The City is in the process of updating its Bikeway and Trail Facilities Plan, which will build upon and revise the City’s 2015 Plan to reflect Albuquerque’s growth as a city, recent investments in bikeways and paved multi-use trails, and national best practices in network planning and bikeway design. The 2024 Plan will recommend and prioritize bikeway and paved multi-use trail projects across the city to make biking a safer and more appealing option for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

The City of Albuquerque's Environmental Planning Commission held a Hearing on the 2024 Bikeway and Trail Facilities Plan on July 18, 2024. EPC made a unanimous recommendation to City Council to approve the plan.

The Bikeway and Trail Facilities Plan (BTFP) was introduced at City Council's October 7, 2024, meeting and it was referred to the Land Use, Planning, and Zoning (LUPZ) Committee. At the November 13, 2024, LUPZ meeting, LUPZ members recommended "Do Pass" to the full City Council. At City Council's December 16 meeting, they unanimously passed the BTFP.

May is National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day typically occurs either the third or fourth Friday of Bike Month. The City of Albuquerque hosts the Bike to Work Day event each year, which is an opportunity to try bicycling for transportation. In partnership with our community bike advocates, local businesses, and partner organizations, the City hosts a variety of Bike to Work Day pop-up stops throughout Albuquerque where folks can pick up bicycle safety goodies such as reflective gear, bells, bike bags, stickers, bike maps, and learn more about bicycling in Albuquerque.
