Shelter Resources and Encampment Transparency

Information on metro area shelter resources and encampment locations and response.

As part of the Metro Homeless Initiative, the City is working to provide an appropriate and effective response to support our neighborhoods and those who need assistance. In order to create lasting change and make a difference in as many lives as possible, multiple departments are working together to address encampments. We are listening to our residents needs and requests and we remain data informed to track our efforts and ensure resources are best allocated.

Public notification of encampments are reported and continually mapped measuring response times and locations to provide the best public services. Mapped locations are based on reports provided and may not be accurate to the actual location of an encampment.

Reports are mapped by responding department and this map is updated as data is available.

Shelter Connect Dashboard

Throughout the year, we are committed to supporting unsheltered individuals in our community. To achieve this, it’s essential to quickly assess the availability of shelter beds. The Shelter Connect Dashboard was developed to provide First Responders and community members with an easy way to find shelter locations for those in need on the coldest nights in Albuquerque.

Occupancy is recorded by responding organizations and updated as data is available.

Most shelters accept individuals through provider referral only. If you or someone else needs assistance finding shelter, please call 311.

Cold Weather Sheltering Plan

On the coldest days of the year, the city activates a Cold Weather Sheltering Plan to provide immediate assistance to unsheltered individuals. This multifaceted plan includes expanding capacity at Gateway West, activating overflow sheltering at Gateway Center, and activating Multigeneration Centers and Community Centers for overflow shelter space.  Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) will once provide 24/7 transport to shelter, including the newly opened First Responder Receiving area.

Report encampments within city limits by calling 311 (505-768-2000), calling 242-COPS after hours, or using the ABQ311 App.

What Does a Response Look Like?

  • A reported site is assessed for the appropriate response including:
    • Outreach
    • Resources and information about shelters
    • Addiction treatment
    • Permanent housing options
    • Abatement or code enforcement notification
    • Storage offerings
    • View the 2024 Resource Card, detailing a thorough list of resources available to our unsheltered community
  • A 72-hour notice is created and several City teams respond, including:
  • After 72-hours the abatement actions begin.

Retrieve your Property

The City of Albuquerque provides storage for community members experiencing homelessness. Having a safe place to store belongings can take away a barrier to get into shelter and stability.

Individuals who use this service can retrieve their property by calling 311 to schedule a time for pick up. Pick up is available Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
